All 25 Kansas City area Hy-Vee grocery stores will host their version of Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nationwide fundraiser for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 6 and 7. The local stands are among a nationwide effort to raise money during that weekend. The Kansas City area effort is the second largest effort in the country with about 700 volunteers – second only to the original stand in Philadelphia. This year’s goal for all the area stores is $85,000, said Cheryl Mozer, who with her family, organize the area drive. Money from the stands will be donated to local cancer research teams at Children’s Mercy and the University of Kansas hospitals, she said. Team leader volunteers at each store help gather help to run the stands, which also will include locations in Lawrence, Topeka and St. Joseph.The Mozer family, which also includes Mark and the couple’s sons, Nick, 13, and Jacob, 10, will volunteer at the Blue Springs Hy-Vee, U.S. 40 and Missouri 7. Jacob was diagnosed, at age 16 months, with a rare form of childhood cancer. The Blue Springs location will include a dunk tank, where tickets can be purchased for $1 for one throw, or $5 for seven throws. Nick recently was named the statewide winner of the Prudential Community Service Award for his role in organizing local lemonade stands. He is doing promotional work leading up to the June event, including a Web site, facebook page, collecting donations and sending out emails seeking volunteers.Several area school personnel are volunteering to be dunked, including Moreland Ridge Middle School Principal Kevin Grover and Activities Director Michael Pezzetti, and Cordill-Mason Elementary School teachers Rebecca Seipel and Emily Wittstruck and Principal Alan Michelson.In addition, T-shirts will be for sale for $15 each. Hy-Vee will donate proceeds from the sale of hot dogs and hamburgers, to be cooked on a grill, to the cause.A silent auction will feature a main prize valued at more than $1,500, with two airline tickets good anywhere in the country, airport parking, two night stay at the downtown Los Angeles Marriott and VIP tickets to the Dr. Phil television show. Bids for the package will open at $400. Smaller auction items include tickets to the University of Missouri football games, T-Bones baseball, KC Wizards soccer and autographed sports photos.Kohl’s is a corporate sponsor, providing volunteers and donating more than $6,000 to the cause. 7-Up Countrytime lemonade is donating all the lemonade and $10,000 to purchase promotional items and other expenses of the event, Mozer said.Visit www.firstgiving.com/kclemonadestands.
