This week the Music Gallery, Carl Wilson, and a handful of musicians/composers want you to celebrate concrete. Paying homage to the iconic concrete architecture that sprout in Toronto between 1950 and 1970 (and to Michael McClelland and Graeme Stewart’s book Concrete Toronto), such musicians as Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers), Sandro Perri (Polmo Polpo, Glissandro 70, ex-Great Lake Swimmer), and Knurl (noise artist Alan Bloor) will perform as part of Concrete Toronto Music.


Romantical

The event surrounds the selected musicians/composers who were commissioned to create original works that both reflect upon the emotional and physical impression concrete architecture has had on Toronto and the nature of the matter itself. The event also brings together for the first time ever experimental composer Neil Wiernik (Naw) and architect/media theorist Greg Smith in an exciting multi-media collaboration of experimental audio-visual examinations of Toronto’s urban spaces.

Concrete Toronto Music will occupy two of the many staple concrete buildings in Toronto beginning on Sunday, May 25 at the Polish Combatants Hall (206 Beverley St.) and continuing on June 1 at the Ontario Science Centre (770 Don Mills Rd). Both largely misunderstood, concrete architecture and experimental musicians are finally given the opportunity to support each otherleave it up to the Music Gallery to arrange such a marriage.
