Kids collect old devices to benefit library

news01 03-15

They say one person’s trash is another’s treasure. Old cell phones and empty ink cartridges might not be the gems of the Dumpster, but these and other electronic devices can be turned into funding for nonprofits or a lifeline for domestic violence victims. Even if they’re broken or outdated, there’s someone out there who will find a use for unwanted electronic devices, and donating them keeps them out of the country’s landfills. When you donate a cell phone, for example, one of three things happens. The device is either recycled, resold or refurbished for emergency use in domestic shelters or elderly care facilities or in developing countries outside the U.S. Through Cartridges for Kids, schools and community organizations, like Mifflinburg’s Herr Memorial Library, are paid for collecting spent ink cartridges, wireless devices, PDAs, video games and digital cameras. Children’s librarian Kelly Walter said the library initiated the fundraiser last year and netted over $200 from donations, which it used to purchase new children’s books. The library takes donations year-round, but now through April 17 is partnering with students at Mifflinburg Elementary School. Kindergarten through third-grade classes are collecting the items as a way to raise money for the library and teach the kids about environmental conservation. On Earth Day, April 22, the library will announce the results of the drive and award prizes to the top collectors.  Cartridges for Kids recycles or resells the items to keep them from contaminating landfills. There are numerous other programs that will take unwanted devices off your hands and put them to good use. Organizations like Phones4Charity work with various nonprofits across the U.S. and in developing countries by refurbishing and reselling donated phones. Proceeds from sales are donated to nonprofit agencies, and working devices are used as a way to link people to emergency services. Often, they’re distributed to agencies who serve abuse victims or the elderly. The phones also provide a source of communication in countries where technology is a scant resource. Verizon Wireless collects mobile phones through its HopeLine program and issues them to domestic abuse victims. HopeLine partners with shelters and advocacy organizations throughout the U.S. to make communication devices available to their clients. The local nonprofit Susquehanna Valley Women In Transition (SVWIT) is one of the hundreds of groups who benefit from the service. SVWIT operates an emergency shelter and provides support and advocacy to women affected by domestic abuse or sexual assault. The HopeLine program accepts non-functional, outdated and working wireless phones, pagers, batteries and accessories in any condition and from any service provider. An associate at the Susquehanna Valley Mall Verizon store said working devices are reprogrammed after erasing any data left on the phone. Phones in non-working condition are dismantled and used for parts or recycled. No matter what you decide to do with that old device taking up space in your desk drawer, don’t forget to erase personal information, delete memory cards and shut off service.
